Earth Day’22

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle 〰️

Today is Earth Day! Today is a reminder to protect the environment, restore damaged ecosystems, and live a more sustainable life. As a photographer, I try to use my images within the parameters of photojournalism to advocate for conservation outcomes. A powerful image can move people in ways that inspire a call to action. Today, I am using my platform to harness the power of storytelling to further conservation goals. Let’s strive to make a difference in the Anthropocene.

On much of my social media, you might come to the conclusion of one thing. I advocate for polar bear conservation. I had the polar bear integrated into my logo to signify my passion for the species and their survival. It is something I care deeply about and something I wish to work on professionally as well.

Polar bears inhabit Alaska, Canada, Russia, Greenland, and some northern islands owned by Norway, such as Svalbard. Northern Manitoba - my home province - is home to many polar bears along the Hudson Bay. This conservation effort hits much closer to home knowing that their habitat is not far from where I grew up.

The Arctic has been experiencing longer ice-free seasons, and because of that, polar bears have been fasting for longer periods of time. Polar bears need the ice to be able to hunt, breed, and roam. The global temperature is warming and it is causing the ice to melt. This is a largely due to human-caused climate change. It is estimated that within the next century, polar bear populations will decline rapidly. Polar Bears International is a great start to educate yourself on polar bear conservation. Consider donating and signing petitions to help push forward legislature and keep an eye on the U.N. Climate reports.
